Clarke and Watt Building Consultancy
At Clarke & Watt Building Consultancy, we’re proud of the people who make our services possible. In this Q&A, we speak with Mel, our Graduate Surveyor, about her journey into building surveying, her experience at CWBC, and her ambitions for the future.
I’ve always been fascinated by the built environment, especially historical buildings. I’m passionate about preserving our history and culture while improving the comfort and energy efficiency of buildings for future generations.
After studying a bachelor’s degree in architecture, I moved into estate agency, where I enjoyed working closely with clients and understanding their needs. That experience led me to explore building surveying, which combines technical problem-solving, client interaction, and travel. It’s exciting to me that it’s such a varied role, with no two days ever the same.
Before starting my new role as a graduate surveyor, I worked a couple of days a week with the operations team while finishing my master’s in building surveying. This really helped me understand how everything fits together at CWBC.
Since joining, I’ve had the opportunity to shadow senior surveyors on residential surveys, attend CPD sessions, and grow my technical knowledge. It’s been a great start, and I’m looking forward to getting more involved in surveying work as I settle into the role.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that attention to detail and impartiality are crucial to being a good surveyor. Even small observations can have a big impact, so it’s essential to stay informed on the latest regulations and industry developments and to take the time to deliver clear, high-quality advice clients can rely on.
Definitely the team. Everyone has been welcoming and supportive from day one. It’s a great environment for learning and development, and the team are always happy to share their knowledge and give you the time and space to grow.
I’m aiming to progress towards chartership with the support of CWBC and continue building my experience across a wider range of projects, including larger commercial ones. I’d love to be involved in work across different parts of the country and keep learning from each new challenge.
I try to balance my free time by keeping active and being creative. I still love swimming, which I used to compete in, and I enjoy painting and going to gigs with friends for a little boogie. I also love spending time with my big extended family.
In the warmer months, I’m usually outdoors hiking, camping, or exploring somewhere new — ideally by natural swimming spots.
At CWBC, we’re committed to supporting the next generation of building surveyors, and it’s great to see Mel developing her skills and confidence as part of our team.
